Siena, day 2 — Oct 11

day’s talk

Today was an absolutely fabulous rest day. We spent three hours at the Cathedral, its museum, its undercroft, and at the baptistery. We visited several other churches, all heavily decorated, but for me, the most notable was the church of Saint Dominic that was dedicated to Saint Catherine of Siena. She was an incredibly impressive woman: intelligent, dedicated to the care of the sick and the poor, and who had the courage to tell the pope in Avignon France, that he needed to move back to his diocese in Rome. He ended up doing it. It leaves me in a place of appreciation for the women in the parish who have been leaders, both as volunteers, and as staff, and especially as part of the pastoral team. I’m thinking especially of Eve Collier, Teresa Runyon and Teri Delgado in my own time — these are wise, competent women. What a blessing for us.

Love from you priest,

Fr. Patrick
