I arrived in Sarzana today, after taking the train from Pisa. Pisa’s cathedral was amazing, and the tower is really leaning. If I was the pastor of that cathedral, I’d never sleep.
Sarzana was pleasant, if a little balmy. I was able to get my first timbro at the Cathedral of our Lady of the, Assumption. The custom on the Via Francigena is the same as on the Camino in Spain, wherein one gets a stamp (timbro in Italian) to demonstrate all the places one passes through.
“He has set his seal upon us and given the Spirit in our hearts as a first installment” (2 Cor 1:22).
The people in town were really helpful in finding the priest who, with very good will, interrupted his afternoon to walk me to the sacristy and stamp my credenziale. I tried to tell him that I was also a priest, but I don’t think he understood me.
Tomorrow is supposed to be 30 K. Here’s hoping the feet hold up (and the rest of me).
Going on pilgrimage through Toscany during harvest time with the beautiful full harvest moon in the evening…doesn’t get much better than that! 🙏✌️
May Raphael lift on your long journey today.
