I did a 12 mile hike today in preparation for my pilgrimage. It was good. I walked in silence, my senses turned outward to the green that remains in the valley floor of Sycamore Canyon, along the coast.
I yearn for the open road.
Life has been good this last couple of months, so it’s not an unhappiness with the everyday. But there is a memory, in my very bones, of the peace of mind that came from my pilgrim walks in the past. So yes, I yearn for the ancient wayst:
Thus says the Lord:
Stand by the earliest roads,
ask the pathways of old,
“Which is the way to good?” and walk it;
thus you will find rest for yourselves. (Jer 6:16)
So even though I don’t start for a month, I am on my way already in my mind.
